(1906-95)
Israeli archae-ologist and historian. He was born in Ciechanowiec in Poland, and settled in Palestine in 1929. In 1951 he became professor of the history of the Jewish people in the biblical period and the archaeology of Palestine at the Hebrew University. In 1952 he became rector of the university, and the following year, president. He directed various archaeological excavations. His publications include numerous archaeological studies, a historical atlas of the country, and a history of Palestine up to the period of the monarchy.
